Nonprofit Journals and General Resources

These are general sources that deal with nonprofit management issues across the spectrum. They are the leading resources for our sector and are highly recommended for keeping abreast of trends.

Chronicle of Philanthropy - www.philanthropy.com -The single most important source for information on the nonprofit sector. This journal is standard reading for those of us living off of grant revenues.

Board Source - www.boardsource.org - Their name tells you what you need to know-their materials focus on your board of directors. A good starting place if you want to motivate, increase or reinvigorate your board.

Standards for Excellence Institute - www.standardsforexcellenceinstitute.org - This group is changing the way nonprofits are managed and how they are perceived by the general public, one certified nonprofit at a time. Probably our most frequently used resource. Every nonprofit should have their Ethics and Accountability Code and you should review it with your board to ensure you are in compliance with all items noted in the code.

Charity Channel - www.charitychannel.com - A great place to network with nonprofit managers from around the country. Their eNewsletters are informative and a great way to keep on top of specific issues.

The Foundation Center - www.foundationcenter.org - A great place for information about private foundations. Here you can get information on how to write effective grant proposals, understand what the latest trends are in grantmaking and you can access their database of foundations in order to submit your proposal (see Grantwriting below).

Nonprofit Quarterly - www.nonprofitquarterly.org -Focused on capacity building and improving management practices this journal provides important insight. For information with a dash of karmic wisdom and humor, sign up for their monthly newsletter by Ruth McCambridge.

Financial Management

The Urban Institute's Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy - http://www.urban.org/content/PolicyCenters/NonprofitsandPhilanthropy/Overview.htm - While this Center of the UI provides a wealth of information on management, capacity building and other topics, we have found their publication on financial management to be especially useful.

Program Design & Evaluation

The Kellogg Foundation - www.wkkf.org/Programming/Overview.aspx?CID=281 -
The Kellogg Foundation is a leading resource for program evaluation and design. Their Logic Model (c) provides a systematic approach to setting your program for success.

Grantwriting/Grants Research

The Foundation Center - www.fdncenter.org - This is the most commonly used resource for identifying foundations and specific requests for proposals (RFAs) put out by grantmakers. You can conveniently access their database of over 78,000 grantmakers from your computer. If you only research grant opportunities on occasion, you can take advantage of their inexpensive monthly subscriptions.

GuideStar - www.guidestar.org -This site allows the user to search public documents of private foundations and nonprofits. Don't forget to look to see how your nonprofit looks on this site-remember, grantmakers have access to this as well and they are examining your 990 while you are looking at theirs.

The Federal Government - www.grants.gov - Wow! Every single grant that is put out by the government must be posted to the public through this convenient central site. That means you can now research grants from Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health and United States Agency for International Development at the same time, using key words, topics, etc. Be careful you can easily get over whelmed by requesting their daily notices on too many topics-better to be selective here.

The Jargon Files - www.emcf.org/pub/jargon/index.htm - Here you can find fun examples of bad writing and language to avoid at this site from the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation. This site also provides resources for improving your writing and a good book on print ad principles with great examples.
